St Helena Island, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is famous for its giant tortoise. His name was Jonathan. He is now 187 years old. He is a giant tortoise belonging to rare Seychelles. Usually, the maximum life span of these tortoises is about 150 years. But Jonathan passed that time and lived for more than 35 years. He was born in Seychelles, a small African island state in the Indian Ocean. Then he was about 50 years old.  It is said that Governor Hudson Ralph Janisch was in power from 1873 to 1890.

The world’s oldest animal, Tui Malila, is a female tortoise. She is reported to be 188 years old. The maximum life span of a human being is a hundred and twenty years. According to reports, French woman Jeanne Calment Lived 122 years. She was 165 years old when she died. It is interesting to note that Jonathan was still alive during World War I and World War II.

Disease is a common factor in every animal. Jonathan also had cataracts in his old age. It has now reduced his eyesight. Jonathan is reportedly suffering from a smell disorder. And tourists can still see him around St. Helena. Jonathan will have the rare chance of turning two hundred years old if he lives another 12 years. We wish him well for it.
